At Bell Labs, I am a member of the Dialogue Systems Research Department
Like universities, the lowest level of organization above the individual MTS is the department. There are usually around 20 people in a department working in roughly the same area. Our area is dialogue systems, and our department is composed of electrical engineers, computer scientists and linguists. A typical application area we work on is in spoken transaction systems for call centers.
Departments are organized into laboratories, and the Spoken Dialogue Systems Research Department is part of the Multimedia Communications Research Laboratory.
