I am a member of the Bell Laboratories Multimedia Communications Research Lab. Our lab concentrates on sound and image processing and interfaces. This work ranges from speech and video coding to handwriting recognition, image recognition, speech understanding and synthesis to dialogue systems applications. A lab is roughly the equivalent of a college at a university.
At Bell Labs Research, a lab is composed of several departments. I am in the Dialogue Systems Research Department.
Labs are themselves organized into divisions. We have computer science, communications and physical sciences research divisions, and the Multimedia Communications Research Lab is in the Communications Research Division. The three divisions of Bell Laboratories Research have as many people in research as the top research universities.
The three divisions making up Bell Labs Research combine with Bell Labs Development to make up Bell Laboratories.
Bell Labs is the research and development arm of Lucent Technologies. Lucent is a large manufacturing company which makes telephony equipment, microelectronics and consumer electronics. It was formed in 1996 as a spinoff from the telecommunications conglomerate AT&T. Lucent took most of the Bell Labs research and got the use of the name and the building that Bell Labs had been in since the 1940s. The core of AT&T Research Labs was formed primarily with Bell Labs employees at the time of the 1996 spinoff of Lucent.
If you're inside Lucent's firewall, you can check out the Multimedia Communications Laboratory Homne Page, and if you're outside the firewall, you can check out the Multimedia Communications Laboratory External Home Page.
