Mitzi Morris's Maine Coon Cats

Like many people, Mitzi loves cats. She fell in love with ``super kitty'' in the window of the Pet Pad, which happened to be on her walk home to the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh. As bad as she felt about buying a cat, it didn't take much convincing. Little did she know at the time, just how super the Maine coon cat breed is.

Deciding that the cats needed a more dignified name than ``Mitzi'', and given their prodigous size and natures, she decided to name them after Norse gods. Having lived for a few years in Sweden, she even went with the Swedish spelling of Thor. That's how Tor-Odin got his name. Rather an ambitous name for a cat, as one Swede informed her, but then Tor's rather a lot of cat at 18 pounds.

After feeling guilty about leaving Tor home all day when she worked, Mitzi was compelled to get another cat. Given how much she loved Tor, when another Maine coon cat showed up at the Pet Pad, it took little convincing to get her to buy another cat. Hence Loki came into her life. The names are quite fitting. Tor's big, dumb, strong, good natured and red haired, whereas Loki is much smaller (only 13 pounds -- a veritable runt of a coon cat), weaker (though still huge and strong for a domestic cat), trickier and black-haired.

There are many more photos of the cats online. Check out the Loki Gallery and the Tor-Odin Gallery.
