Growing up in Cleveland, Mitzi spent a lot of time playing with clay at the Fairmount Center for the Arts. She was very interested in Zen and all things Japanese, especially ceramics. She wanted to run off to Oregon and be a potter. But she didn't.
After moving to Pittsburgh, Mitzi rediscovered her love of clay. Pittsburgh has a vibrant clay community, with several teaching studios, and many excellent teachers. At the School of the Carnegie Mitzi studied with Valda Cox, Jorge Montemayor, and Gary Pletsch, and at the Manchester Craftsmens Guild she studied with Steve R.
In the fall of 1994, Mitzi lived in Utrecht, Holland. During this time she studied with Cees Akterberg, Eline Janssons, and Tjerk van der Veen. These artists each have a strong and distinctive style, and taken together they are as dissimilar a set of potters as can be imagined, but they are all wonderful teachers. Exposure to such diversity was inspiring and intoxicating, and the pots that Mitzi made while in Utrecht are among her best work ever.
Mitzi's goals are to continue to seek out new teachers, new studios, and to eventually establish her own.
